Coursing Ability Test (CAT)
The Coursing Ability Test was designed with canine competitor safety in mind and your dog does not complete with another dogs in any AKC CAT tests. Dogs run individually for a 300- to 600- yard course and must finish the test within 90 seconds to 2 minutes respectively. The key difference is the CAT course is designed with twists and turns for your dog to anticipate movement of a live lure, without endangering a live animal.
Dogs that pass the CAT three times will earn a Coursing Ability (CA) title. Ten passes and a dog earns a Coursing Ability Advanced (CAA) title, and 25 passes results in a Coursing Ability Excellent (CAX) title.
Fast Coursing Ability Test
(Fast CAT®)
Fast CAT is a wildly popular sport and dogs can’t get enough of the fun! It’s like drag racing for dogs. This is a timed 100-yard dash where dogs run one at a time, chasing the “bunny” in a sprint to the finish line. Imagine the thrill of your dog running at top speed, ears back, eyes focused, legs churning, and oh-my-dog the running faces! Wait until you see photographs of your dog running Fast CAT.
Dogs that earn 150 points will earn a BCAT title. 500 points and a dog earns a DCAT title, 1,000 points earns an FCAT title. Every 500 points after the FCAT title earns your dog the FCAT# distinction, FCAT2, FCAT3, etc.

AKC REGISTRATION
FUN RUNS
If this is your first time participating in a dog sporting event like CAT or Fast CAT, don’t worry! These sports are truly for all breeds regardless of standing with AKC. The other good news is there is minimal obligation to get started! CAT and Fast CAT offer Fun Runs which are less expensive than qualifying runs and offer your dog a chance to “try it.” Fun runs are subject to availability depending on how many qualifying runs are scheduled so check your event Premium List or join us on our Facebook group for up-to-date information and availability. When your dog is consistently running Fun Runs with enthusiasm it’s time to sign them up for a Qualifying Run!
QUALIFYING RUNS
Qualifying runs are for when your dog has shown they are very interested in chasing the lure and you are ready to start accumulating points for titles. You will need to have an AKC registration number to participate in a qualifying run. We have included links for purebred dogs as well as Canine Partners which is our All American Dogs that want to play also. You can use the links below to start your registration.
AKC CANINE PARTNERS™
The AKC Canine Partners™ Program is an all-encompassing program that welcomes all mixed breed dogs of any age to the AKC family. Dogs enrolled as an AKC Canine Partners™ pup have the ability to participate in AKC sports and events, like CAT, FAST CAT, Dock Diving and many others.
AKC PUREBRED REGISTRATION &
AKC PUREBRED ALTERNATIVE LISTING
Only purebred dogs can join the traditional AKC Purebred Registry or AKC Purebred Alternative Listing (PAL) programs. This information would most likely have been supplied by the breeder your dog came from. AKC registration is a requirement for all dog sports to earn titles as it is the method with which points are accrued and recorded.
